English to Bulgarian Translation

English to Bulgarian translators usually encounter many challenges. Firstly, all Bulgarian nouns are appointed a grammatical gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter). Additionally, Bulgarian grammar accounts for singular and plural nouns but also takes on the concept of dual. A dual is a concept used in Old Bulgarian when describing precisely two of something, but today it only applies to countable nouns of masculine gender.

High-quality Bulgarian translation services are more complex due to tenses and word order. There are nine tenses compared to twelve in English. You may initially assume this makes translating English to Bulgarian easier, but it can be confusing for English speakers to choose the correct tense to convey meaning. Similarly, syntax form is very flexible – although this makes it easy to form grammatically correct sentences, selecting the proper word order for context is challenging.
Bulgarian to English translation projects also rely on understanding the Cyrillic alphabet, unique Bulgarian pronunciation, and the seven grammatical cases. As a South Slavic language, the Bulgarian vocabulary is vastly different from English, too. For accurate and professional translations, you’re best contacting a translation agency.

Bulgarian Translation Tips & Insights

Our English to Bulgarian translators are experts in their field and know the secrets to excellent translation. Here are two considerations to think about before you translate from English to Bulgarian. Use these to avoid errors and improve your cross-cultural communications.

Be Cautious of Pronunciation

Bulgarian is written using the Cyrillic alphabet, but some of the letters appear to look familiar. И, for instance,  looks like “N” but sounds like “I”. Similarly, Я is a Bulgarian vowel (ja) but looks like the English “R”. This makes pronunciation issues common. Even when translated to the Latin script, pronunciation is confusing. The Bulgarian “B” (Б) is pronounced like the English “V”, “H” (ч) is pronounced as “N”, and “P” (П) is pronounced as “R”.

Bulgarian vs. Macedonian

Bulgarian and Macedonian are remarkably similar, so much so that many linguists reject Macedonian as an individual language – they view it as a Bulgarian dialect. Either way, there are distinct differences between the two. Ensure you know whether you’re seeking an English to Bulgarian translator, an English to Macedonian translator, or whether you have no preference. If unsure, your Bulgarian translation agency can help you decide.

Bulgarian Language Facts

  • There are around 15 million Bulgarian speakers worldwide. Most of these speakers are in Bulgaria, where Bulgarian is the national language.
  • Bulgarian is written in the Cyrillic script, which was actually created by two Bulgarians (Cyril and Methodius) in the ninth century. Many Slavic languages adopted the script and still use it today, including Russian and Serbian.
  • The European Union has three official alphabets thanks to Bulgarian! Aside from Bulgarian, all other member states use the Roman or Greek alphabet.
  • The letter ь can only ever be written if you add an “O” afterwards: ьо (jo). This is similar to how the letter “Q” in English is nearly always followed by “U”.
  • The Bulgarian alphabet currently has 30 letters. Before 1945, there were 32 letters.
  • Bulgarians have a day dedicated to this; It was once called “Cyrillic Alphabet Day”. Now Bulgarians call it the “Day of Slavonic Alphabet, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture”. It takes place each year on May 24th.
  • The Ottoman Empire ruled Bulgaria for five centuries. Consequently, the Bulgarian language has loaned a notable number of words from Turkish.
  • Bulgarian and Macedonian are very closely related languages. Before 1945, Macedonian was considered to be a dialect of Bulgarian and not a separate language in its own right.
